| 'Dawson's Creek' Phenomenon Continues in Wilmington
Wilmington — It's been 10 years since 15-year-old Joey Potter discussed her emerging hormones with best friend Dawson Leery in his second-story bedroom. Ten years since Pacey Witter, dressed as a sea monster for a role in Dawson's amateur movie, ogled new-girl-in-town Jen Lindley. Ten years since a certain teen drama became a national phenomenon and ushered Wilmington's film community into the national spotlight. On Jan. 20, 1998, "Dawson's Creek" premiered to wildly mixed reviews. Praised and reviled for its hyper-sexual, super-wordy dialogue, the show centered around four high school students in the small town of Capeside, Mass. – wannabe filmmaker Dawson (James Van Der Beek), sweet girl-next-door Joey (Katie Holmes), lovable scoundrel Pacey (Joshua Jackson) and new vixen in town Jen (Michelle Williams).
The Don handed test reprieve
It looks like Sir Donald Bradman will remain a part of Australia's citizenship test. New figures show that 93 per cent of immigrants who take Australia's controversial new citizenship test pass it on their first or subsequent attempts. The test was introduced by the previous federal government and tests the applicants' knowledge of Australian history, culture and values, and includes questions about cricket great Sir Donald Bradman, one of former prime minister John Howard's heroes. Immigration Minister Chris Evans has ordered a review of the test, to be completed in April, and says the Bradman questions will be among those under scrutiny. But he says while there is a bit of a bias in the sporting section to the 1930s, 40s and 50s, he thinks a question about Bradman is a reasonable thing to put in.
Supervisors: Carefully consider Sheriff Carona's replacement
To the O.C. supervisors: As you undertake consideration of a replacement for Sheriff Mike Carona, I hope you will do so with due diligence and thoughtful, rather than expedient, deliberation. The department has been functioning at a satisfactory, if not excellent or optimum level. Here are some issues I would like you to consider: Should the position of Sheriff be an elected position or appointed, where accountability to you as the Board enables swift and effective action should that position be abused or have negative consequences for the Orange County populace as a whole? Let's not have another fiasco. You need not feel time pressure to replace the sheriff in the next few weeks with someone like Ralph Martin, Jo Ann Galisky or other readily available folks. Let's get the best person for the job who has not just a vision, but has implemented their vision and has proven results.

Lib Dems propose tax credits reform
Welfare spokesman Danny Alexander said the system is over-complicated and can make things worse for families who are in the most financial need. "What we want is for the award to be fixed for a six month period, then it is recalculated," he told GMTV. "What it would mean is that people would have stability. "They would know the money they were getting for a six month period wouldn't be clawed back." Mr Alexander admitted that Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was improving the system but said people could still be asked to pay back money if they had not noticed a mistake on the information HMRC had sent them. .
Labeling abortion 'evil' is just unfair
The Sun's photo captioned "A 'March for Life' in Washington" (Jan. 23) shows thousands of anti-abortion demonstrators walking up Constitution Avenue in Washington. But what about American lives after birth? The United States ranks near the bottom for infant mortality among the developed countries. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the death rate of babies born to African-American mothers in poverty is 2.5 times the rate for babies born to white mothers. And what about our shamefully high homicide rate? I hope those demonstrators care about these precious lives after birth. .
Competitive intelligence 101
You can imagine how popular I was in the plant, especially when taking into account I had exactly 0 years, 0 days, 0 hours and 0 minutes of actual tire building experience. And I was 23. I used to joke (after ducking punches) with the operators that I should just wear a black t-shirt with a scull-and-cross-bones emblazoned on the front and be done with it. I learned a ton, but it was a dirty job. In business, there are some dirty jobs as well. Carrying out competitive intelligence is one of them. I get asked a lot 'how' to conduct competitive intelligence. i.e. how to extract information from organizations/firms/people that may or may not want to part with it. You can look this up online and find all kinds of vague moral and ethical guidelines, and links to nowhere.
