A chance to take care of us (1/27)

Long years ago, when I was growing up, school choices in Columbus were few and well defined. If you were white you attended an elementary school, one of two junior highs, Joe Cook or Caldwell and Lee High. If you were black, you followed a similar but separate course and ended up at Hunt."Separate but equal" as the courts had said. No, not really; the kids at Hunt used worn-out books and hand-me-down sports equipment. In the early 70s with federally mandated integration, all that began to change. Books have been written trying to explain those times. It's safe to say that local officials were in every way ill-prepared for the turbulence that ensued.Like an iceberg coming apart in warm waters, the schools began to fragment. Private academies, both secular and parochial, sprang up around the state.Visionary or courageous leadership was in short supply.

Parent-run thrift store will fund teachers' pay raise

Second-grade teacher Carol Linton never knew the parents at Lansing Christian School cared so much about the school's teachers.

Linton said she fought back tears Friday when she helped cut the ribbon on a new parent-run thrift store that has the mission of funding teacher salary increases.

"This is above and beyond anything we could really ever dream of," Linton said. "I feel so humbled."

Fire districts' tax-hike requests differ

The district is looking to have five personnel members on duty at all times at each station, including new full-timers as they are hired. And at this time, there are no plans to cut the current contract or part-time staff, Vrba said.

"This referendum would add to the existing staffing, but with full-time personnel," Vrba said.

"That's going to give us the ability to handle two or more calls independently out of each station," Vrba said.

"It is a pretty dramatic increase, but we have been maintaining operations with our existing budget, and to take the next step we need to add personnel," he said.

This is the first time that the Northwest Homer fire district has gone to referendum since 1980, Vrba said.

City hockey's future gets blast from past

Bob Lundeen, captain of the Minneapolis Southwest hockey team that won the 1970 state title, dropped the puck before Wednesday night's game between Minneapolis East and Minneapolis West at Parade Ice Garden. Efforts are being made to revive the proud history of city hockey by introducing younger kids to the sport and recruiting better coaches.

Why are drugs present in school?

Visitors and locals alike often rephrase the famous Vegas saying, "What happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans. Teachers have a different take on Vegas' mantra of shamelessness - what happens in New Orleans happens in schools. Therefore, astute parents can't be surprised to hear about incidents of drug abuse in schools.

Have you talked to your teenager about the consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs and/or other substances? If you do, then you know that students regularly misuse drugs on and off their campuses. The term, "misuse," cannot be overstated because what drug could an emotionally and intellectually underdeveloped person use recreationally? Teenagers are naturally inquisitive beings. However, experimentation with mind-altering substances disrupts maturing intellectual processes that should eventually serve as the foundation for their thinking adult lives.
