Pat McKee: High School Q&A
Question: I was reading that the Oregon-Davis girls basketball team has won 37 straight games. What is the record for longest winning streak? (Cory from Pendleton) Answer: The girls basketball state record for girls basketball consecutive wins is 57 by Fort Wayne Northrop; it was an undefeated state champion in 1985-86 and returned to the finals again in 1986-87 before losing. Bedford North Lawrence won 55 in a row from 1990-92, and Martinsville won 55 in a row from 1996-98. Also, North Vermillion won 50 in a row (2001-03), Bloomfield won 48 straight (1974-76); and East Chicago Roosevelt (1976-78) and the old Ladywood-St. Agnes of Indianapolis (1974-76) each won 45 in a row. Bedford North Lawrence holds the girls basketball state record for consecutive regular-season wins (88) that stretched over four seasons.
'Value' in faith-based education
Patty has come to appreciate the family values of the Catholic school. "In a world that's moving so fast, they can concentrate on morals and values here," she said and added her kids have attended the school for six years. "It's fun. The teachers welcome you. The biggest thing is the Christian foundation." Religion and its associated values are part of each student's daily education. "It's a pleasure to learn more about God each day," said Clemens, 8, a third-grader. "I've gone here awhile. I love having my friends here and learning about religion. We go to Mass on Fridays," said third-grader Mary Edwards, 9. Joe Crown, 9, third-grade, likes the religious aspect of the school. "I like learning about God and how Jesus died on the cross," he said. For Becky Harris, 14, it is important that everyone gets along at the school she's called home since kindergarten.
Voice of academia
After a long career in journalism, including stints as head of the Voice of America and host of All Things Considered, Sanford J. Ungar was named president of Goucher College in March. He recently discussed his plans for the school, its role in the life of Baltimore and the rising cost of education. Are there any parallels between being a college president and a journalist? Did one prepare you for the other? I think that journalism is good preparation for life -- it is a sort of an ongoing liberal arts education in many respects. So, yes, I think in that sense it is good preparation for running a liberal arts college because it is in itself a liberal arts education. I think that what it takes to do journalism well is to have curiosity, to be able to put oneself in other peoples positions and think about what they would like to know and to have a sort of empathic sense of whats going on in the world.
At Elite Prep Schools, College-Size Endowments
EXETER, N.H. When Curtis Thomas, a 14-year-old from a poor family living in St. Rose, La., arrived here two years ago to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, he brought little more than a pair of jeans and two shirts. That would hardly do at a 227-year-old prep school where ties are still required for boys in class. .
Shopping to help the economy is just so, you know, stimulating
We'll use the rebate checks for that credit-card debt, right? Though the accrued interest means we'll come up a little short. Am I the only one queasy when thinking about yet another reactionary solution to yet another stock-market slowdown? The House last week passed along a plan that would give $600 to people making at least $35,000 a year, with another $300 for each kid in a family, whether one or two people head the family. Americans who make a lot more or less than $35,000 a year would get different amounts, though unmarried individuals who make more than $100,000 might not get anything. This week, the Senate will churn out its version and it seems pretty likely that millions of Americans will get a check sometime this spring, though no one knows for sure when — the IRS already will be busy mailing out regular tax refunds.
