| Locals in healthcare field learn stance of presidential candidates
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Healthcare is one of the most important issues in the 2008 election and nurses, doctors and medical students at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse know the stance of three presidential candidates. Representatives for McCain, Clinton and Obama told the crowd about their candidates' health care beliefs. Medical students say it's good to know the different opinions the candidates have. "There's a lot of people who are altruistic in the medical field and they want to help people. We get a lot of that side of the conversation but we don't often get the other side, that health care is a business," said Toby Anderton, a second-year medical student. .

Even with the apparent shift in power with Warner Bros. going Blu-ray Disc exclusive this June, Microsoft, one of the founding supporters of HD DVD, reiterated its faith in the high-definition optical format. Speaking to 1up during CES 2008, Microsoft corporate VP Jeff Bell said regarding the Warner announcement, "We were disappointed with the announcement. It has a consequence. I will tell you that we are committed to HD-DVD and still have some great partners -- Universal, Paramount, DreamWorks -- these are great participants in the format. We have sold very well the HD-DVD accessory." While Microsoft has been very forthcoming with Xbox 360 console sales figures, the company rarely mentions the sales of its HD DVD add-on accessory. According to NPD Group's report released in November 2007, the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive accessory has sold a collective 269,000 units in the U.S., making for a 3.4 percent attach rate with the console.
The night Stacy died: Chaos, a father's grief
Efforts to remember 9-year-old Stacy Williams III, and how he died, can be seen in many ways. The Manatee Woods area where he lived is now ground zero for efforts to turn around a troubled neighborhood with an increased law enforcement presence and cleanup projects. School children have painted a bright flowery tribute to Stacy on a fence at the entrance of his neighborhood, once covered in gang graffiti. A basketball court dedicated to Stacy has been built at the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, a few blocks away. But the efforts at revitalization in Stacy's neighborhood are in stark contrast to the environment that led to the chaotic day a stray bullet took his life. On May 21, a fight broke out between teenagers in the Manatee Woods neighborhood, an area plagued by drugs, shootings and street fights, according to witnesses.

The kids called it "Boo's Warehouse," after the building's manager, 61-year-old Michael "Boo" Booher. And for months on end, neighbors say, Boo hosted raves that packed 'em in by the hundreds. It was quite the scene, but like all scenes without the proper permits, it was destined to come to an end. Two weeks ago, the Phoenix fire marshal caught wind of a rave called "Bloodfest 3." When the party went off, even after the Fire Department's warnings, they shut it down. And what the fire marshal found at the scene was scary enough to give even the most laid-back parent a coronary. We're talking eerie special effects, with cobwebs and skulls adorning the walls. We're talking hundreds of kids, many distinctly underage fire officials estimate more like 14 and 15 years old than 17 ready to party the night away.
Study pessimistic about Afghanistan
WASHINGTON // Afghanistan could become a failed state and the scene of a "forgotten war" because of deteriorating international support and a growing violent insurgency, according to an independent study co-chaired by retired Marine Corps Gen. James Jones and former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering. "Afghanistan stands at a crossroads," concludes the study, an advance copy of which was obtained by the Associated Press. "The progress achieved after six years of international engagement is under serious threat from resurgent violence, weakening international resolve, mounting regional challenges and a growing lack of confidence on the part of the Afghan people about the future direction of their country." A major issue has been trying to win the war with "too few military forces and insufficient economic aid," the study says.
The Weekend Warrior: February 1 - 3
It's going to have some heavy competition for the top spot with the concert movie Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour (Disney), which opens in just 680 theatres nationwide, but should be able to capitalize on the enormous fanaticism for the young singer/starlet from tween and younger girls that have sold out her concerts nationwide. The chance to see the concert in Disney 3D might be the next best thing to being there and one can expect Cyrus' young fans to flock to see this in theatres for its limited week-long run in IMAX theatres with higher ticket prices allowing for a bigger opening than last week's U2 3D. .
