Tories unveil £8m hit list of cuts and savings

Leisure and cultural services also take a heavy hit.

Tories plan to go ahead with a proposal to axe free swimming for under-sevens. It will affect almost 5,000 children who signed up to the popular scheme, launched in 2006.

Oaklands Leisure Centre will close at weekends, from 11.30am on Saturday, while St Mary's Leisure Centre hours will be reduced.

Three cricket pitches and four football pitches will also be closed.

The Turner Sims concert hall, Nuffield Theatre, Art Asia and City Eye, will all see their grants slashed.

Only the council reliant Mount Pleasant Media Workshop will survive art grants cuts.

Elsewhere neighbourhood partnerships, seen as an ineffective "talking shop" by Tory chiefs will be scrapped and more cash and support given to residents' associations.

The Guardian

It's bad enough that every time she hears about a new book or newspaper story about her community, her first reaction is a kind of “Please, God, don't let it be another disaster." The last book to have gained her approval was Dr. Mohammed Abu El-Ghar's Yehud Misr: Min Al-Izdihar lil Shatat (The Jews of Egypt: From Prosperity to Dispersion, 2004), which she describes as “fairly good and informative." .

MUSLIM TEEN: 'JESUS CHRIST AND HEAVENLY FATHER' REPULSIVE

This is how Muslims take over a culture not previously Islamic. They complain and get their way. They dont assimilate. They dont dialogue. They demand. Liberal judges in America, for instance, are heeding the complaints of Muslims in our Judeo-Christian culture.

According to CAGE a Muslim pupil complained to the graduation ceremonies committee that the words Jesus Christ and heavenly Father are repulsive to him. Its there in Louisville, Kentucky, that the federal judge granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting a prayer from being said during graduation ceremonies at an area high school.

Of course, the American Civil Liberties Union is there to give the Muslim voice support.

The teen is 17 years old.

Teen badly burned after gang of 4 sets him alight

An 18-year-old was doused with gasoline and set on fire near Burnaby's Cariboo Road secondary school Monday night, in an incident that shocked area residents.

RCMP said the victim, a New Westminster resident, was walking along the north side of 16th Avenue sometime after 9:45 p.m. when he was confronted by four males who tried to entice him into a fight.

He was then sprayed with gasoline and set alight, police said. His attackers fled down a nearby trail leading to a 10-hectare wood.

Aiken County reaches out to its young people

Because of that willingness to help, Aiken County was named one of America's Promise Alliance 100 Best Communities for Young People. The honor came as a result of an application prepared by the Aiken County Community Partnership, a collaboration of agencies with a mission to look at quality-of-life issues in the county and improve them.Specific accomplishments that led to the award included the Summer Institute for Educators, the creation of a 211 telephone system that serves a number of counties, establishing the state's first therapeutic childcare center, having the first Health Center of the Year Award winner in the state and for the setting up the first South Carolina iAm laptop project for ninth graders.Problems are nothing new. They have been with us all along. It is what a community does about solving those problems that means the most.

As I see It: Immigration is new front in quest for civil rights

A leading presidential candidate has taken flak for supporting legislation which tried to deal humanely with "illegals," and for saying that "illegals," too, are human beings. Another leading candidate was blasted for supporting the granting of drivers licenses to "undocumented workers.Gov. Ted Kulongoski recently signed an executive order making it difficult for "illegals" to obtain an Oregon driver's licenses. Most people take all this for granted and see nothing outrageous about it.Will people in 2048 look back at our current attitudes toward "illegals" with the same bafflement as we now look back atpre-1968 racial attitudes?Paul F. deLespinasse of Corvallis is a professor emeritus of political science from Adrian College in Michigan. He can be contacted at pdeles@proaxis.com.

Why Is Huckabee Doing So Well?

I have no interest in fanning the flames of bigotry or supporting lost causes.

If it would keep the sorry arsed yankees from moving here and turning this place into another over-taxed, no expectations except for welfare, guilty about everything ever done, running up housing cost for those born here, all while living in their exclusive golf or gated communities, while passing judgement, I would paint it everywhere it would fit. But oh well, times and things change. You seem to believe what the media tells you about us, otherwise you would know that it is not 1865 or 1965 here anymore. My next door neighbors do not share the same racial make-up as I and I'm proud to have them as neighbors. They have and continue to serve this great country and have raised four fine young men which I hope to see them reach as far as their abilities will take them.
