Deadline looms for high school open enrollment

Parents only have a few days left to submit applications if they want their high school students to attend a school other than their neighborhood campuses in the 2008-09 school year.

The Antelope Valley Union High School District offers two options for nonstandard placements - Open Enrollment or School Choice. Parents can choose to apply for one or the other, but not both.

Early this month, the high school mailed out information packets about the programs to the homes of current eighth-grade public school students and to the principals of charter and private junior high schools, district officials said.

Open Enrollment is the district's standard system for allowing students to choose their own campus within the district.

Since most of the district's schools are severely overcrowded, a limited number of Open Enrollment spaces will be available for 2008-09 school year, officials said.

Clemens talks with high school coaches

In a session before about 1,000 Texas high school baseball coaches Saturday, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner stuck to baseball and cracked jokes, making no mention of the allegations in the Mitchell Report that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

"He talked like nothing ever happened. It was a non-issue in there," said Waco Midway High assistant coach Coby Meinzer.

Clemens spoke for more than an hour at the closing session of the annual convention of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, the nation's largest such group. He shared tips on techniques and took questions, all pertaining to the game itself.

"It was real warm, nothing negative at all," said Will Joiner, a coach from La Porte High.

The speech was closed to the media, and Clemens was driven in and out of the convention center through a private garage.

A chance to take care of us (1/27)

Long years ago, when I was growing up, school choices in Columbus were few and well defined. If you were white you attended an elementary school, one of two junior highs, Joe Cook or Caldwell and Lee High. If you were black, you followed a similar but separate course and ended up at Hunt."Separate but equal" as the courts had said. No, not really; the kids at Hunt used worn-out books and hand-me-down sports equipment. In the early 70s with federally mandated integration, all that began to change. Books have been written trying to explain those times. It's safe to say that local officials were in every way ill-prepared for the turbulence that ensued.Like an iceberg coming apart in warm waters, the schools began to fragment. Private academies, both secular and parochial, sprang up around the state.Visionary or courageous leadership was in short supply.

'High School Musical 2' Delivers Fresh Fun

The makers of High School Musical 2 wanted to avoid repeating themselves. They have succeeded. They have delivered a sequel that is both zanier and more dramatic than the original.

The DVD will be one of the most popular gifts this Christmas, although the movie celebrates summer. Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) lures Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) to work at her parents' country club. He inadvertently angers her by bringing along girlfriend Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) and their East High friends.

The wackiness comes mainly from Tisdale, whose broad performance would fit on The Carol Burnett Show.

Quiet on history, grand on her own

If the seller's aware that Theodora Keogh is the granddaughter of TR, he doesn't say so.

Theodora's travels

Born June 30, 1919, Theodora was the daughter of Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt and his wife, Grace Lockwood. As a young woman, she performed as a ballet dancer on Broadway. It is said that Salvadore Dali designed her costumes for a South American tour but the creations were so weighty, Theodora and her partner had difficulty leaving the ground.

In 1945, Theodora married set designer and Vogue illustrator Tom Keogh, and the two lived a Bohemian life in France. It was here she began to write the novels Keogh would illustrate.

The Boston auction house of Skinner recently offered one of Tom Keogh's erotic ink drawings of Theodora dancing tabletop, her filmy skirt afloat, revealing well-muscled dancer's legs.

Setbacks in January are no match for her dreams

Such is the life of a first-time entrepreneur.

In late February or early March, Guerra plans to officially open RealKidz Inc.

Her clothes are to be sold through a Web site, www.realkidzclothing.com, a catalog and a network of independent sales representatives.

An idea is born

Like many entrepreneurs, Guerra got the idea for her company from personal experience.

Four years ago, her daughter, Gabriella, then 6, couldn't find clothes that fit.

"Shopping is not a fun experience," said Guerra, RealKidz's 37-year-old chief executive.

She talked to her friends and discovered that Gabriella's problem wasn't unique.

At the time, Guerra worked as a professional office and home organizer, but she sensed an opportunity.
