Bill would revamp DGIF board
Current law says all traps must be visited daily. SB 83, introduced by Watkins, would require trappers to visit their sets once every 72 hours. The House has received a similar bill, HB 575, introduced by Samuel Nixon, Jr. R- Richmond. >Nixon has another trapping related bill, HB 574, which would establish a $10 trapping license for youngsters 16 and under. >Many people agree that it is important to crack down on unwanted animals, but some casual breeders say SB 55 goes too far. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Roscoe Reynolds, D-Martinsville, requires “companion animal dealers" to purchase a $150 annual license and to have their pups sterilized and fitted with a microchip. This bill would be harmful to people desiring to maintain a bloodline of hunting dogs, its critics say.

Exclusive: Grand jury to investigate 'monster pig' kill
Not one of them thought to say: "Look, son, you had your chance, but those belly shots have wounded the animal and it is in distress. We have to put the creature out of its misery." Instead, they allowed the hog to bleed out from injury. Mike Stone said during several phone interviews recorded over numerous hours that no kill shot was ever taken. "I regret that it didn't die the first shot," he said on June 5. "But that's all I can say. That's all I'm going to say." The mystery remains: Why did the hunters do nothing? As director of the Art Science Research Laboratory, which runs a media ethics program and a web site called StinkyJournalism.org, I led hundreds of hours of on-the-record interviews and research into the monster pig case (the records of which were subpoenaed by Clay County District Attorney Fred Thompson).
Schools strive to stem violence
Threatening messages that they exchange on teen-oriented Web sites spill over into school conflicts. As city schools chief Andres Alonso tries to reform a troubled system, ensuring order is a necessary first step. Within the past month, he offered to install metal detectors in any middle or high school that wants them. Forty schools have asked for the devices so far, and Alonso said he expects more requests. "The premise of a school is it needs to be a safe haven," Alonso said. "There are so many children who start out on the right path and become perpetrators or victims of incidents that make instruction an afterthought." Teachers and administrators face monumental challenges trying to keep the violence of city streets outside school walls, and trying to educate children who in many cases are traumatized by the violence they've witnessed.
Whiskey Flat melodrama ’ÄòWay Out West in a Dress’
Sierra Performing Arts and Cerro Coso Community College are presenting this year's melodrama for Whiskey Flat Days. The cast and crew are busy preparing for the show that will be held at Kernville Elementary School, 7:00 p.m. on Feb 14, 15, and 16. This zany production is being directed by Mary Hanawalt. Gary Geivet and this reporter are directing the musical portion. 'Way Out West in a Dress' or 'Life's a Hurdle When Your Wearing a Girdle' centers around two fellows from back East. Clarence thought he inherited a 'saloon' from his deceased aunt. After realizing that he really inherited a 'salon' he and Roger decide to dress up as women to run their new business. Of course trouble come along, as in all good melodramas. The heroin is abducted and the villainess behaves dastardly.
Robbing the Rich to Give to the Richest
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, fresh from an investigation of the student loan industry, is out with a plan he says will "help reverse the crisis in college affordability." Kennedy's Robin Hood approach takes $18 billion from lenders and applies it to reducing loan repayment costs for students, among other purposes. .
