Movie news: Brad Bird's rat chef flies to Oscar nomination

"We're in Utah," the Corvallis-bred director said Tuesday afternoon, fresh off a plane and heading for the Sundance Film Festival. Though the aircraft had landed, Bird's spirits were still flying high. The filmmaker was absorbing the news that "Ratatouille," his hit movie about a Parisian rat with mad gourmet skills, had cooked up five Oscar nominations: best animated feature, original screenplay, musical score, sound editing and sound mixing.

"It's really wonderful to get so many nominations when we came out in what the Academy would consider to be earlier in the year," Bird said. One of the most respected animated filmmakers in the business, Bird won the 2005 best animated feature Oscar when he was honored for "The Incredibles."

But don't think for a minute that Bird is low-key about the Oscar love for "Ratatouille." "You don't get too blase about the Oscars," Bird said with a laugh.

Prosecutors say cross-burner threatened witness

Christopher Hudak of 27 Ridge Road is the older brother of one of the girls involved in a fight at Hendrick Hudson High School with Timothy Artope, 15, the oldest son of the family victimized by the cross burning.

Hudak, charged with first-degree aggravated harassment, a felony, was arraigned this afternoon in Peekskill City Court. His lawyer denied the allegation, but entered no formal plea.

City Judge William Maher set bail at $10,000 and issued nine orders of protection, seven for members of the Artope family and two for people in whom Hudak confided about the cross burning. Prosecutors say Hudak threatened to slit the throat of one of those individuals if they told anyone about the crime.

He was posting bail at the Westchester County jail about 7 p.m.

Chad Cushnir

"Cush" has been working at First Coast News since May of 2002. As a photojournalist in the sports department, Chad can usually be found covering events at local high schools, colleges, or Jaguars games, but he can also be seen in front of the camera on Sundays during Sports Final as part of the “Cush Cam" segments in which he usually has some sort of feature story.

After spending the first five years of his life in New Jersey, Chad has been calling Jacksonville his home ever since. He is a proud graduate of Middleburg High School where he played on the Broncos football team and ran track as well.

Chad's college years were spent in Tallahassee at Florida State University, so he always enjoys going back there to cover Seminole athletics, but also does his best to remain unbiased towards the Gators and Canes.

Phishing As A Service, Part II

Now you no longer need an in with the international Storm syndicate to outsource your phishing attacks. On InformationWeek, George Hulme reports on a DIY phishing service:

"The service automatically generates text for the phishing emails that target various Web mail and social networks, including Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, and others...

While this is more of a novelty, and reminiscent of the old-time virus construction kits from the early 1990s, it reveals how heavily social networks will be targeted going forward."

Hulme predicts a significant attack through the social networks. I still think it's coming from instant messaging.
