| No to tax plan
Re the Jan. 21 article Tax plan's worth faces test at polls: What will we lose if this amendment passes? What services are likely to be cut and by how much? We depend on government for child care and schools, roads and transportation, police and firefighters, garbage collection and the environment, health protection and care for the old and poor. MARTIN TERRIS, Miami Gaza's power issues The Jan. 21 article Israel cuts off power in Gaza does not note the constant rocket attacks on the area from the source of that power, Gaza's electrical plant. It also omits the repairs made by Israeli workers to constantly fix the breaks in service. You should gather all the facts before you print. MOLLE GRAD, Miami Looking for unbiased Middle-Eastern news coverage in Section A of The Miami Herald is becoming increasingly reminiscent of Tropic Magazine's scavenger hunt.

Peabody's Mello proves a consummate teammate
His role is getting us under control at both ends of the floor," Mastrangelo said of Mello, who ranks in the top 10 percent of his class academically. "He's a really good on-the-ball defender. He's had to defend the other team's toughest guards, like Junior Lugo of Salem and Mike Clayton of Beverly. He's gotten big baskets for us and, overall, he's a very intelligent player. "But you know what? Danny would be valuable to us even if he didn't score a single point. He didn't have to come back, but he took his captaincy very seriously." Mello is loving the atmosphere of Peabody's first season in the Northeastern Conference. He cites games against Beverly, Lynn Classical and Salem as examples where the player/crowd intensity really stood out. "We're into it (as players) and I think the crowds are way better (than most Greater Boston League games)," said Mello.

2008 vote will be an election to remember
John McCain of Arizona is among those reaching for the GOP nod. The state's presidential primary is Feb. 5, "Super Duper Tuesday," when 22 states will hold primaries or caucuses that day. Arizonans will decide the fate of three of the nation's most closely watched congressional races in Districts 1, 5 and 8, playing no small role in whether Democrats bolster their hold on Congress or surrender control after just two years. Three dozen Arizona voter initiatives already have been filed. Voters could have a say on rolling back property taxes, revamping health care or cracking down on underground labor, among other issues, depending on which measures collect the necessary signatures to make the November ballot. All 90 state legislative seats are in play, with Democrats confident they will reclaim the House for the first time since 1966.
