SDS: One Generation Got Old, One Generation Got Soul

Sixteen students sat around a table in the Manhattan cafeteria of the New School discussing where commas should go. They were rewriting, for the third time, a mission statement for their chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, the activist group that had been dormant for nearly 40 years. They wanted the document to be collectively produced, but after more than three weeks of communal drafting, no one seemed particularly content with the results. One student thought the phrase "we accept all persons" should be broadened to cover animals. Another worried that the word "delineation" was alienating because "it means drawing lines, and don't we object to lines?" The only sentence everyone seemed to support wholeheartedly was the final one: "Power to the People!"

The subject was a sensitive one, because the revived group has yet to produce a document as compelling as the S.D.S.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.

Tech 'Solutions' Your Small Biz Can't Use

I just grew a little peach fuzz. Using my frequent-flier miles has always been a huge frustration, except for that one time I flew to Fargo, N.D., on a Saturday night in February. Baked potato chips? They taste like wood.

Unfortunately, the disappointment extends well beyond consumer products. My life as a small business owner has been littered with stuff that doesn't work as billed, particularly technology. We business owners are subjected to an endless array of tools that never fail to disappoint. We're promised. We pay. And we're let down. The list of overhyped and underwhelming technology changes constantly. So here's a quick snapshot of 10, in no particular order, that don't work. At least this week.

It takes more green to fill grocery bags

You'll get your $300 as a credit on your tax return in spring 2009. The same would apply if you made too much money in 2007 to be eligible for the payments now, but made much less in 2008 and were therefore eligible. You'll be able to claim your credit next year.

Q: My child was under 17 last year, so I claimed him as a deduction. But he's not eligible for me to claim this year. Will I still get a payment?

A: You'll still get your money based on 2007 income and dependents. You won't have to give back money that was paid "by accident."

Q: Where will the IRS mail the check?

A: The check will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If your address has changed, you need to notify the IRS to make sure you get any check or correspondence, said spokesman Chris Kerns.

City police officer dies in line of duty

As the wife of a police officer with the CCPD, I would appreciate it if the readers who feel they need to be rude and tactless would find another story to comment on. My husband worked with this young man and he was a very kind and safety conscious officer. My advice to the Caller Times would be to remove the comment section from this story to prevent some really ugly comments being written and the family, extended family and the families of all the police officers in this city from having to look at these comments. Please pray for the Thebeau family and for all the brothers and sisters in blue. God Bless!
