Turnout a big surprise for caucus organizers

Caucus site co-manager Sally Wylie realized the turnout would far exceed expectations Saturday when Republican participants were lined up outside St. Gall Pastoral Center in Gardnerville in 21-degree weather.

"We set up for 150; we have at least twice that here," said Wylie, dressed in red, white and blue set off by a sequined vest.

At Carson Valley Middle School, Democrats ran out of ballots as about 400 mid-town Gardnerville residents packed the multipurpose room.

At both locations, precinct captains and candidate representatives tried to outshout each other as participants figured out how to proceed in Nevada's early caucus.

Seth Littlefield, 79, sat alone at the Democrats' "Uncommitted" table.

"When you're undecided, you're really alone.

Early this year, the cardinal dismissed six priests known to have abused minors over the years and said that the archdiocese had identified a total of 35 priests who had sexually abused children since 1950. Initially he refused to give names of those priests to authorities, saying he was concerned about protecting victims' confidentiality. He later relented under pressure from prosecutors. Archdiocese officials have said the dismissed priests had been working in administrative jobs and have been told to seek lay status from the Vatican. That would strip them of the right to perform sacramental duties. .

Daughters of ex-Red Wing show up on 'Idol'

Alyonka and Diana Larionov, daughters of former Detroit Red Wings great Igor Larionov, didnt get any ice, er, vocal time on Tuesday nights American Idol, but it seems as if theyve made it through to the shows Hollywood round.

The singing sisters, whove performed the National Anthem at hockey games, popped up for a few seconds at the end of Tuesday nights episode, during a montage of people from the auditions in Omaha, Neb., who nabbed golden tickets to Hollywood.

Falcons hit fast, hold off SRV

2-1 win over host San Ramon Valley in an East Bay Athletic League contest Tuesday.

With the gutsy win, the Falcons (13-3-2, 6-2-1, 13 points EBAL) muscled past the Wolves (12-4-5, 4-2-4, 12 points) into second place in the EBAL standings. Furthermore, the win avenged a 2-1 home loss to the Wolves on Jan.12.

"It's a real big win for us," Foothill coach Ron Lambert said. "We should have won the first game, but we couldn't finish. Tonight, the girls dug deep. I was proud of them."

The Falcons' defense came up big. The Wolves had trouble even penetrating the Falcons' side of the field for the first 30 minutes and managed just two shots on goal in the first half.

When the Wolves did close in on the Falcons' goal, defenders Sophie Metz, Amanda Luxford and Krista Bormann repeatedly stifled the attacks.

However, after moving into the penalty area the former Rangers player opted to cut back on his right-foot and this allowed Sean Dillon to block his resultant shot.

Lovell headed the rebound back across goal but Dillon was once again well placed to clear.

With five minutes remaining before the interval it was United's turn to miss a clear-cut chance.

Willo Flood delivered an excellent inswinging corner from the left wing which picked-out Kenneth at the back post.

The United defender rose high above Considine to make contact with the ball but could only direct his header wide from barely a couple of yards out.

Kenneth went someway towards making up for that miss shortly afterwards as he made a crucial interception to stop a cross from Richie Byrne which fizzed in from the left as the first half ended in an evenly-contested stalemate.
