| MC proposes to abolish enforcement wing
The Municipal Corporation has proposed to abolish the enforcement wing of the MCC. This despite the fact that the MC leaves no stone unturned to announce its efforts to remove encroachments across the city. The proposal to abolish the enforcement wing, however, is being kept under wraps. The proposal was put before the screening committee last month, which was chaired by the Commissioner Mr PS Aujla. When complaints of corruption were highlighted in the enforcement wing last year, the house had passed a proposal that appointments of inspector and sub- inspectors should be on the rotation basis of six months. But that has not even been partially followed by the corporation till date. Sources, however, state that this proposal won't go down well as shutting down a department was not the solution.

Maryland Today
HAGERSTOWN (AP) — A Washington County judge has received a reprimand from the Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities for undignified and disparaging comments from the bench. Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone was reprimanded for statements made in open court on a single day in April 2007. In one instance, he referred to three minority women in the Public Defenders Office as “The Supremes." In the other, he suggested that a defendant wishing to replace his public defender be given a qualified male attorney. Boone acknowledges that the comments were suggestive of racial and sexual bias. He says he “lost it" that day and felt terrible about what he said. One of the public defenders, Nancy Forster, says Boone called her after she filed a complaint and apologized profusely. The Birth of a Newspaper
Ceremoniously, as a photographer waited to record the scene, Alicia stepped up to the press and pushed the button. The first issue of Newsday started rolling off the presses. Stan Peckham grabbed an armful and ran out the door with Nick Grande, the office boy, to drive off quickly on two missions. Peckham's most urgent assignment was the registration of the copyright for the new paper at the county courthouse in Mineola. The weekly newsmagazine Newsweek had been friendly to the new paper all summer long, Peckham said. In the weeks just before the first edition, they had been anxious to know its name, so they could prepare a story to run when the paper started up. But the management of Newsday was fearful that Newsweek might try to get some kind of injunction against the name, on the basis of copyright infringement.
