Former SIU head Shaw among Lincoln Academy Laureates

Blagojevich announced the winners who will be presented The Order of Lincoln Medallion by Lincoln Academy officials at a special ceremony Saturday, April 26 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. "These individuals honor us with their achievements and make us proud to be Illinoisans. Their scholarship, leadership and contributions to our world make them giants in their fields," Gov. Blagojevich said. The 2008 Laureates also include longtime SIU board member William Norwood, a Centralia native. On Jan. 17, 1977, Shaw assumed the presidency at SIUE after being vice president and dean at Towson University in Maryland. On Sept. 15, 1979, Earl Lazerson was named president after Shaw was named chancellor of the SIU system. He kept the chancellor’s job until 1986 to become the president of the University of Wisconsin.

WASHINGTON -- In his final State of the Union address Monday night, President Bush urged the House and Senate to work together swiftly to pass a $150 billion stimulus package that would give most of the nation's families tax rebates and businesses incentives to invest in new equipment.

To an increasingly jittery nation, Bush acknowledged that economic growth was slowing, prices were up for food and gas, and the housing market was declining, and he vowed to act quickly. "At kitchen tables across the country, there is concern about our economic future," Bush said.

Hopefuls spar over education strategies

The two best-known Democratic candidates for governor used their debut debate to take their first direct shots at each other Tuesday, centering on one's future plan for building schools and the other's past votes to raise college tuition.

"There will be a big new state bureaucracy in Raleigh that will own school buildings in your district. That's how I see Richard's plan," said Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, describing a program offered by her opponent, State Treasurer Richard Moore.

The two Democrats squared off in the second hour of debates in front of a meeting of state school board members from across the state.

The three Republican candidates dueled during the first hour of the forum, with each group answering the same questions from a moderator.

Each party will select its nominee in May.

Lieberman backs McCain but won't be VP

WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent who nearly won the vice presidency as a Democrat in 2000, says there's no way he'll be Republican Sen. John McCain's running mate should McCain become the party's presidential nominee.

"No, I'd tell him: 'Thanks, John, I've been there, I've done that. You can find much better,' " Lieberman said Tuesday at his Senate office. "I'm not seeking anything else."

The Connecticut senator said he was unequivocally ruling out sharing the GOP ticket with McCain.

Lieberman's endorsement of McCain in December and the campaigning he has done in New Hampshire, Michigan, South Carolina, Florida and other states have stoked speculation that the Arizona senator might choose Lieberman as his running mate should McCain win the nomination. Lieberman was Democrat Al Gore's running mate in 2000.

Landmark Communications to sell Las Vegas, Nashville TV stations

Landmark Communications Inc. said Tuesday it will sell its two broadcast television stations in Las Vegas and Nashville, Tenn. but is still mulling options for its other businesses, including cable television's The Weather Channel.

The family-owned company said it has completed a strategic review of its television broadcasting businesses and will sell KLAS in Las Vegas and WTVF NewsChannel 5 in Nashville with the help of Lehman Brothers.

Landmark's vice chairman, Richard F. Barry III, declined to disclose possible sales prices or identify potential buyers.

The Norfolk-based company still is evaluating options for its other businesses, including cable television's The Weather Channel and its flagship daily newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot, also in Norfolk, Barry said.
